1st Annual Alumni Game...
Saturday, March 1, 2008
A&M (Present) 15 A&M (Past) 0
In a hockey game resembling an NBA All-Star game, this contest between the young guys and the old guys was a great example of what has been, where we all are today and what hockey will be like when you get there.
A solid contingency of former players made the journey to College Station and were immediately impressed with the new Arctic Wolf Ice facility. Many of these Alumni players started the current program, and have traveled to exotic destinations like Belton, Texas and the Willowbrook Aerodrome, Houston Texas for ice-time to enjoy seasons of only 10-20 games. Bus rides and car pools – ah, the memories.
My, how things have changed.

Texas Tech Game 4...
Saturday, February 16, 2008
A&M 6 Texas Tech 5
For those in attendance, we were treated to perhaps the best Hockey entertainment in the Arctic Wolf Ice Center to date!
The Raiders came to the rink looking to even the series from Friday’s loss and the Aggies were looking for a sweep to the weekend. Both teams retained their full benches and both teams needed the victory.
The game was a physical, over the top performance from two very competitive programs with over 40 penalties assessed. The officials levied 16 first period penalties, and this statistic does not fully convey the intensity level of the scoreless first period.
With 1:00 minute elapsed in the second period, A&M notches the first score. Assistant Captains Eric Engelking and Jeff Diltz applied consistent pressure in the Raider zone, fore-checking to stymie the defense. A shot, a rebound and a bounce created the early A&M lead.
At 6:12, A&M forced a face off deep into Raider territory. In similar fashion to the Friday night goal, Nathan Hayward moved to control the loose puck from the face off. Using the traffic as a screen, an accurate wrist shot put the Aggies ahead 2-0.
To round out the period’s scoring and to produce a commanding 3-0 lead, the Aggies score with 2:51 remaining. Justin Cooley saw a great read and a threaded pass allowed Diltz (2) to create a breakaway score.
The second period generated three game misconducts and a DQ for fighting and an additional 14 minor penalties. Again, a most physical game.
At this point, we were to witness an entirely different contest between these two rivals.
As a testament to the character of the Red Raiders, the visiting team performed some serious re-grouping during the 2nd period break, and within the first eight minutes of the 3rd period, Tech scored three unanswered goals to tie the game.
Unbelievable.
At this point, we again witnessed an entirely different game. A&M was assessed the only three penalties, all minors, in the 3rd period.
With 10:54 remaining, Dustin Roark scores on a slap shot blast past the goalie’s blocker.
Tech answers in less than 1 minute – score 4-4. Less than one minute later, Brian Dinkelkamp dumps the puck towards the Raider net into traffic. Coolie bangs home a rebound for a 5-4 lead. Less than 1 minute later, the Raiders again tie the score at 5-5.
The flow continued nervously and conservatively for each team – each looking for the other’s mistake to capitalize.
At 16:31, A&M forced the play deep into the Raider zone. “Kinger” worked the puck low out to Coolie. A soft pass for a one-timer slap shot from “Diltzy” (3)* and A&M re-establishes a 6-5 lead.
A&M survives a minor penalty and an extra skater to preserve the hard fought 6-5 victory and a weekend sweep.
Both teams gave and left it all on the ice for 60 minutes – truly an outstanding game. We offer our congratulations and respect to the Texas Tech Red Raiders for their truly competitive come back and finish.
This concludes our home schedule for this season.
Due to circumstances beyond our control, our final home game will be our first Alumni Game.

Texas Tech Game 3...
Friday, February 15, 2008
A&M 3 Texas Tech 1
The weekend series marks the balance of the Home and Home from October, 2007, and both teams have much to prove.
The Red Raiders are vying for a play off spot and are on a roll following their un-beaten record and eventual Big XII Ice Hockey Tournament Championship. The Aggies are 0-3 against their Panhandle Players, and are looking to finish the season with a successful home winning streak.
The Aggies controlled the play from the onset and scored a disallowed goal within the first few seconds. Shortly after, Assistant Captains Jeff Diltz and Eric Engelking cycled the puck deep in the Raider zone, and with a quick pass and one-timer from the slot, Justin Coolie earns the Aggies early 1-0 lead.
With 2:10 elapsed in the second period, Texas Tech ties the score at 1-1. At 10:27, the Aggies score the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal. On a Julien Legrand clearing pass from the Aggie zone, Michael Molge and Nick Xenakis created a two-on-one situation. Crossing the Tech blue line, Molge chips a soft pass to Xenakis and another one-timer high glove side finds the back of the net, 2-1 Aggies.
The tempo and style was very representative of all previous contests – fast, aggressive, flowing, physical – both teams were well coached and disciplined to the task. However, this was to be the defense of the Aggie Home Ice.
With 6:22 remaining in the 3rd period and with a face off deep in Tech territory, Diltz wins the crucial face off. Nathan Hayward alertly takes control of the puck, uses the screens, drives to the slot and fires the puck home low glove side.
With a 3-1 score and the clock ticking, the Red Raiders pull their goalie for the extra attacker with two minutes remaining. Solid strategy kept the Aggies from shooting for the empty net goal and with effective chips out of the zone, the clock expired to a 3-1 Aggie victory.
An excellent game to watch and an excellent victory for the Aggies!
Re-match Saturday Night.

Big XII Tournament Game 4...
Sunday, February 3, 2008 9:00 am
A&M 11 Iowa State 4
In a rematch of the previous day’s contest, Iowa State and A&M meet again to vie for 5th place. Due to injuries and a sweeping flu bug, both teams had seriously depleted rosters – A&M competed with only ten skaters total.
A&M took control of the game early, scoring three unanswered goals. The first came at the midway point with Michael Molge leading Eric Engelking to create a 1-1 situation. Using the defenseman as a screen, Engelking picks the top right corner.
Mark Moreno scores a pretty goal from Brian Dinkelkamp and Engelking and Ryan Wilck cashes in an empty net slap shot rebound from John Rordvedt.
Iowa State remains competitive and scores with :53 seconds left in the period for a 3-1 score.
A&M continues their balanced scoring with four unanswered goals to start the 2nd period - Nathan Banks from Ryan Wilck and Nic Culliton; Engelking from Dinkelkamp; Nathan Hayward from Banks; Nic Culliton from Justin Coolie and goalie Clair Gannon but ISU continued to be competitive and rounded out the period scoring at 7-2.
To start the 3rd period, A&M scores twice –
Coolie from Engelking, and Banks unassisted. The cyclones continues to battle and scores again, 9-3. A&M scores twice more – Molge unassisted both scores.
As a testament to their competitive character, Iowa State rounds out the scoring - firing the final goal in each of the three periods for a game ending score 11-4.
Both teams shared one penalty a piece – a Referee’s dream.
My personal congratulations to both teams for playing through some challenging situations – that flu bug / virus was BAD.
The Texas A&M University Ice Hockey Team also extends a sincere “Thank you” to the Kansas Jay Hawks Ice Hockey Program for their hospitality on the successful 2nd Annual Big XII Ice Hockey Tournament.
Final Rankings:
1. Texas Tech Red Raiders, 4-0
2. Nebraska Cornhuskers, 3-1
3. Kansas Jay Hawks
4. Missouri Tigers
5. Texas A&M Aggies, 2-2
6. Iowa State Cyclones, 0-4
The Aggies return to Texas and travel to UT– San Antonio for a week end series Feb. 9 and 10, and we also host the Big XII Champions, Texas Tech Red Raiders, Feb. 15 and 16.
We again thank our fans for their continued support of their Aggies and Texas Collegiate Ice Hockey!
Big XII Tournament Game 3...
Saturday, February 2, 2008 8:00 pm
Nebraska 4 A&M 3
During the course of the Big XII Tournament, A&M had the opportunity to play another opponent from earlier in the season – an early November contest with Nebraska in College Station. The Aggies, looking to avenge the 4-2 loss, welcomed the opportunity for another rematch.
Again, another excellent hockey game with two very evenly matched teams playing very similar styles – conservative in their defensive zones, good flow in the neutral areas with aggressive shots and pounding to the net in the opponents territory.
Both teams needed the win to advance to the Championship Game.
A&M found the score board first at 4:15 into the first period. Line mates Justin Coolie and Nick Xenakis created an effective break out from the A&M zone. Their forward pass lead Michael Molge deep into Nebraska territory and an accurate wrist shot found the back of the net, 1-0.
Nebraska tied the score 6:13 remaining and took the game lead with 7:39 elapsing into the 2nd period.
The next goal produced an interesting statistic – goalie Kyle Vrla’s first assist of the year and perhaps again the lone point of any goalie in this year’s Tournament.
Upon the Cornhuskers dumping the puck into the Aggie zone at 6:48, Vrla saw the line change and immediately forwarded the puck to defenseman Dominic Marino. Another quick pass to Xenakis and a slapshot from the high slot ties the game and ends the second period tied at 2-2.
Nebraska started the 3rd period scoring at 1:23 and again at 3:22 to take a commanding 4-2 lead. The Aggies never quit, and continued to pressure Nebraska. Solid Nebraska goaltending retained the two goal difference until 9:50 remaining in the final period. Linemate Jeff Diltz fed a loose puck across the goal line to a patient Eric Engelking for a nice tap in goal.
Despite pulling the Aggie goaltender, solid Cornhusker goaltending retained the one goal differential through the balance of the game for a Nebraska victory, 4-3, and a shot in the Championship Game vs. the unbeaten Texas Tech Red Raiders.
Big XII Tournament Game 2...
Saturday, February 2, 2008 4:00 pm
A&M 4 Iowa State 0
This game represented the first Ice Hockey game between these two teams this season, and perhaps ever (?).
Cyclone Head Coach, Scottie Jobjen, is a former Assistant Goalie Coach for the Aggies and a former employee of the Arctic Wolf Ice Center in College Station, Texas. Coach Jobjen has also enjoyed a victory over the Nebraska Cornhuskers earlier this season. Both teams looked forward to a competitive contest.
Again, another competitive, up-beat hockey game with limited interruptions, aggressive offensive strategies and strong defensive systems.
The tempo was fast from the beginning – both teams needing the victory to advance to the next bracket. A&M scored first at 5:13 of the first period. At even strength, forwards Eric Engelking and Justin Cooley cycled the puck low into the Cyclone zone. Drawing in the cyclone defender, this created open ice for defenseman Nic Culliton, who fired a slapshot through the screen.
A&M scores again with 7:09 remaining in the period. From a face-off scramble involving Ben Lang and Nathan Hayward, Nathan Banks picks the puck out and bangs a nice wrist shot past the goalie. First period ends 2-0, Aggies.
The second period continues with the same strong tempo and remains scoreless until 7:43. On a power play opportunity, Michael Molge moves the puck deep into Cyclone territory. Concentrating on the opening, Molge passes to point man Dominic Marino. Justin Cooley tipped the low, hard slap shot past the Iowa State goaltender, and the Aggies take a 3-0 lead into the 3rd period.
The final score was a power play effort with 9:53 remaining in the game. The defensive partners Dominic Marino moved the puck D to D to John Rortvedt II. An accurate slapshot produced a rebound for well positioned Mark Moreno.
A&M goaltender Kyle Vrla, posting an excellent game, recorded his 3rd shut out of the season and lone shut for any team during this year’s Tournament.
A&M advances to the next round with a 1-1 record, and needs a win to advance to the Championship Game.
Big XII Tournament Game 1...
Friday, February 1, 2008 11:00 am
Kansas 4 A&M 2
For the 2007-08 season, the Big XII Ice Hockey Tournament was hosted by the Kansas Jay Hawks on their Home Ice in Overland, Kansas.
Six teams were in attendance:
Pool A
Texas Tech Red Raiders
Texas A&M Aggies
Missouri Tigers
Pool B
Kansas Jay Hawks
Nebraska Cornhuskers
Iowa State Cyclones
(Due to various issues, the Texas Longhorns and the Colorado Buffaloes were not in attendance).
Tournament play was established by a round robin between Pool A and Pool B. After the first three games, teams were paired to compete for 1st, 3rd and 5th. All teams were guaranteed four games.
Texas A&M University was scheduled for the first game of the Tournament against the Kansas Jay Hawks - a rematch of an earlier January 20 game ending as a 4-2 Jay Hawks win (empty net goal). Both teams were looking forward to the Home and Home re-match.
A&M learned very quickly that the style of play was much more physical North of the Red River. Both teams engaged in a rugged, fast pace tempo with limited interruptions with a total of eleven total penalties being assessed (we typically average over 25 / game). The 1st period ended quickly in a 0-0 tie.
The Aggies opened the second period scoring early at 4:01. On a nice break in the Kansas zone, Dustin Roark slapped a low shot to the goalie. This produced a rebound to Michael Molge who found the back of the net with an accurate wrist shot. At the ten minute mark, Kansas tied the score and took the lead with 3:03 remaining to close out the period 2-1 Kansas.
Both teams played very well – aggressive, smart, flowing hockey – good scoring opportunities, solid defensive plays and stand up goal tending at both ends.
A&M continued to battle and tied the score at 5:45 into the 3rd period on a nice give and go from Nick Xenakis to Roark.
This game could have gone either way, but Kansas scored with 9:37 remaining on a power play opportunity to take a 3-2 lead late into the 3rd period.
Both teams continued to press – mistake free and no penalties for the last ten minutes.
A&M pulled their goalie to create the extra attacker and Kansas scored an empty net goal with 2:39 remaining. Final Score 4-2, Kansas.
University of North Texas Game 4...
Saturday, January 26, 2008
A&M 4 North Texas 2
This game was an exact replica of the Friday night game – aggressive, physical hockey – with both teams earning their share of 32 total penalties.
The first period was again scoreless as neither team could find the range. Both goaltenders were up to the challenge, rejecting 18 and 11 shots respectively.
To begin the second period, UNT again lights the scoreboard first at 0:36 on a scrum in front of the Aggie net. Both teams continued to press but were unable to prepare consistent offensive pressure due to multiple penalties. A&M finally notches a score at 11:59 on a power play goal. Solid puck movement inside the Green Machine zone allows Dominic Marino to feed his defensive partner John Rortvedt II. Another low bullet from Johnny finds the back of the net. A&M earns a go-ahead goal from the efforts of two new additions to our Hockey team this semester. Rookie Justin Cooley created open ice and fired a quick shot to the UNT net. The goaltender was unable to control his re-bound, and was promptly scored upon by Ben Lang. We do believe that Lang has recovered from his injury that prevented him from joining our ranks in the Fall semester. Gentlemen, welcome to the game! 42 seconds later, A&M scores a short-handed goal for a 3-1 score. An opportunistic steal by Michael Molge allowed a great feed to Assistant Captain Jeff Diltz breaking down the left side. Diltzy beat the defenseman on the 1/1 and a neat deke to beat the goaltender – ESPN time. UNT refused to quit. On a clearing pass and a bad pinch, the Green Machine capitalized on their 2 on 1. Second period ends on a 3-2 score.
The 3rd period starts with a penalty at the 2-minute mark and ends with a penalty with 4 seconds remaining and a dis-qualification (DQ) after the game. The lone score was an Aggie short-handed tally at 12:15 into the 3rd period. Nick Xenakis controls a UNT pass and carries the puck across the Green Machine blue line. By drawing the defenders, Xenakis drops a pass to Nathan Banks. A quick look and an accurate shot finishes the games’ scoring at 4-2, Aggies.
Texas A&M University Aggies’ next series of games occurs in the Big XII Tournament in Overland Park, Kansas during Friday and Saturday, February 1 and 2, 2008.

University of North Texas Game 3...
A&M 4 North Texas 1
The University of North Texas Green Machine traveled to College Station to finish the Home and Home series from October, 2007. With the first game a come-from-behind overtime Aggie win, A&M swept the very physical weekend from the Green Machine. Since then, UNT has beaten the Longhorns in Dallas. The Aggies were prepared to do battle with the Green Machine, and that is exactly what happened.
The teams played aggressive and scoreless hockey for the first period, with both teams competing short-handed for the majority of the period. As for many games of late, the Aggies played with strong intensity but were unable to capitalize in the first period. Classic example - Aggie defensemen John Rortvedt II split the needle with an excellent pass up the middle to Mark Moreno to create the breakaway, but to no avail. ESPN time – almost.
The Green Machine used the period break to re-group and buzzed the Aggies for a power play score with just 1:29 elapsed. A&M continued to force the play and were rewarded at 9:56. Adjusting to the open ice created by the 4 on 4 scenario, Michael Molge pushed the play into the neutral zone. Nick Xenakis received a strong pass, eluded the UNT defenseman and with a crisp wrist shot, tied the score for the Aggies. With just over a minute later, the Aggies’ Xenakis again forced the play deep into the UNT territory. With some cycling down low and quick shot from Dustin Roark, Assistant Captain Eric Engelking secured the re-bound for a 2-1 A&M lead to finish the 2nd period’s scoring.
The Aggies started the 3rd period with continued offensive pressure to the Green Machine defensive systems. At 2:41 and with a 5 on 4 power play advantage to the home team, Rortvedt started the break out, carrying the puck over the Aggie blue line. An up-ice pass to Assistant Captain Jeff Diltz moved the puck deep into UNT territory. A nicely timed pass to Molge with a one-timer to the bottom left corner puts the Aggies on the board again, 3-1. Texas A&M finished the scoring on an unassisted power play goal with 5:33 remaining. On a weak, deflected clearing pass from UNT, Rortvedt blasted a one-timer slap shot rocket from the point and found the bottom right side of the net.
Final score, 4-1, Aggies.
The well coached UNT Green Machine continues to play a physical, aggressive style and challenged the Aggie defensive corps with multiple scoring opportunities. However, A&M’s goalie, Kyle Vrla, was equal to the task by turning back 28 shots.
The final game of the series continues Saturday evening, Arctic Wolf Ice at 5:45.
Kansas Game 1...
Friday, January 18, 2008
Kansas 4 A&M 2
Following the three week Christmas break, the Aggies hosted the Kansas Jay Hawks at the Arctic Wolf Ice Center in College Station and were handed a 4-2 loss to begin the balance of our season.
During the scoreless first period, bus legs seemed to be a big factor for the sluggish Jay Hawks as their offensive control and pressure was limited. The Aggies, however, created multiple scoring opportunities, but could not capitalize.
The contest continued scoreless until 4:34 remaining in the second period. Kansas created some strong fore-checking pressure behind the Aggie goal. With a centering pass and a low shot, which found the back of the net, the score was 1-0. The tempo continued in the period with a conservative style – limited penalties, short passes, limited mistakes.
The third period produced the majority of the scoring. At 16:41, Kansas scored again to take a commanding 2-0 lead. With the clock ticking, the Aggies continued to press. With 6:33 remaining, John Rortvedt II drove a low slapshot from the point towards the goal. A mis-direction tip to the top left corner put the Aggies on the board.
The Aggies persisted. With 5:37 remaining, rookie Nathan Banks created the scramble in front of the Kansas net. A point shot from Captain Phil Lowery produced the rebound to Banks, burying the puck in the net to tie the score at 2-2.
With 3:29 remaining in the game and emotions running high, the Jay Hawks moved the puck into the Aggies offensive zone. A&M was short handed and drew another penalty, slashing, creating a five on three power play for Kansas. With 3:10 remaining in the period, Kansas capitalized on their power play making the score, 3-2.
Never leave early.
With a 1:22 remaining in the game, Kansas earned a 2 minute roughing penalty to finish the game short-handed. The Aggies pulled their goalie for the extra attacker but could not create the offensive pressure and the Jay Hawks score an empty net goal for a final score of 4-2.
We enjoyed hosting the Jay Hawks in College Station, and we welcome the opportunity for a potential re-match at our Big 12 Tournament in Overland Park, Kansas, Friday and Saturday, February 1 & 2, 2008.

Texas Tech 3 A&M 2
For the final 2007 Hockey game for both the Aggies and the Red Raiders, we enjoyed the confines of the American Airline Center in Dallas, Texas – home to the Dallas Stars of the National Hockey League.
As the inaugural game to the Holiday Classic between these two Universities, Texas Tech defeated A&M by a 3-2 score. This contest was very well played by both teams – solid officiating, a 7/6 split for penalties, strong goaltending, controlled offensive pressure with great puck movement – and served as a outstanding opportunity to showcase Texas Collegiate Hockey.
Both teams appeared comfortable playing in ‘The Big Show’ and played an up-tempo first period with consistent pressure, goaltending and puck movement. The Aggies held the edge early but were unable to produce a score. The Red Raiders notched the first goal at 16:49 but were answered at 8:47. The Aggies leading scorer, Dustin Roark, steals a re-bound from the goaltender, and alertly performs a wrap-around to the out-of position goalie. The first period finishes at 1-1.
The second period was the demise of the Aggies as the Red Raiders capitalized on costly mistakes – a bad-clearing pass from the A&M zone and a 2 on 1 breakout by the Raiders produced 2 unanswered tallies and a 3-1 score.
Both teams continued their style of play – controlled, moderately aggressive, open ice hockey. A&M enters the scoring column at 12:46. Captain Phil Lowery intercepts a clearing pass in the Raider zone, and passes to Assistant Captain Jeff Diltz. Diltz takes two quick strides and accurately scores to the top right corner.
With a 3-2 score and a shorter clock, time became an issue for the Aggies. Pressure, two good scoring opportunities and a ‘pulled goalie’ for the extra attacker was set aside by the Red Raider defense, as they retained their scoring margin and victory.
We congratulate both teams for a well played, entertaining Christmas Hockey game. We also thank the following individuals for their support:
James Light – President, Dallas Stars – for the opportunity to play prior to a Stars game.
John Higgins – Senior Account Executive – for outstanding hospitality to facilitate the game.
Phil Lowery – TAMU Captain – who initiated the original idea, made the connections, and finished the deal.
On behalf of the Texas A&M University Ice Hockey Program, we offer a sincere Thank You for all of your (all y’all’s) efforts and we look forward to continuing this ‘new’ Tradition!

Texas 2 A&M 0
In perhaps the most evenly played game this year between the two teams, the Longhorns blanked the Aggies 2-0 in College Station.
At 11:52 of the first period, the Longhorns dumped the puck into the A&M zone, followed with aggressive fore-checking and banged home a rebound. With 2:16 remaining in the period, the Longhorns scored again to finish the period and the game’s scoring at 2-0.
The Aggies and the Longhorns were assessed 20 and 14 minor penalties respectively. Therefore, both teams played on a short compliment for most of the game and were frustrated by their inability to establish a sustained attack.
The current series status stands 3-2 in the Aggies favor. The final two games between these teams are the last two regular season games of the schedule:
Friday, Feb. 29, 2008 at TBD
Chaparral Ice, Austin
Saturday, Mar. 1, 2008 at 5:45 PM
Arctic Wolf Ice. College Station
These games could have play-off significance.
The Aggies next and last game of the year 2007:
Texas Tech
Sunday, December 23 at 1:00 PM
American Airlines Center, Dallas
At this time, from the Texas A&M University Ice Hockey Team, we wish all a Merry Christmas, continued success and a very Happy New Year in 2008!

Texas 4 A&M 3
The Aggies, currently at 3-0 against the Longhorns, traveled to Austin for the 4th game in our seven game series. The return of their Coaching Staff and a few key players spelled victory for the home team as they survived a late flurry of Aggie scoring to win 4-3.
As in all of the A&M–UT matches, the game was fast paced and open with good pressure and flow from end to end. The initial goal was on an A&M power play as the Longhorns sent a zone-clearing shot into Aggie territory. Goalie Clair Gannon recognized the line change and sent a strong pass to Assistant Captain Jeff Diltz along the offensive blue line. A short chip up the boards to beat the UT defense and an accurate wrist shot high glove side places A&M on the scoreboard at 8:49. The home team evened the scoring at 3:48 to finish the period at 1-1.
The Longhorns continued the scoring at 9:26 and 8:23 to finish the second period at 3-1.
With just under 3 minutes remaining in the contest, A&M pulled their goalie for the extra attacker and UT scored on a open net making the score 4-1 on 4 unanswered Longhorn goals.
A&M pulled their goalie, and continued with the extra attacker to press the play into the neutral zone. On a tipped clearing pass, Dustin Roark created a breakaway and beat the goalie between the legs at 1:06.
In for a dime, in for a dollar, the Aggies again pulled the goalie. They forced the play and generated another breakaway with Mike Molge scoring unassisted with 31 seconds remaining.
The Aggies, unfortunately, ran out of dimes and clock time. Final Score 4-3, Longhorns.
A spirited game from all players – 30 penalties including 2 dis-qualifications (DQs) for fighting - made for an exciting and entertaining game for all in attendance.
As for the last two years, the A&M–UT match up plays as a Home & Away series. The weekend contest continues in College Station on Saturday, as the Longhorns visit the Aggies at Arctic Wolf Ice at 5:45 p.m.
Tulane Game 2...

A&M 15 Tulane 1
This game was a virtual repeat of the previous evening’s contest – the Aggies dominating the play and the Green Wave spoiling the A&M shut out in the final minutes of the game.
From the initial face off, the Aggies applied constant pressure to Tulane and opened the scoring at 16:22 on a nice give-and-go from Ryan Wilck to Mark Moreno.
The Tulane goalie stifled the Aggie attack until 9:19. A smooth break out began with Captain Phil Lowery in the Aggie zone, a transition chip pass to Nic Xenakis, and a positional rebound goal for Dustin Roark. Less than two minutes later, solid play-making created another score. Nathan Hayward and Andrew Tully moved the puck to Ryan Kahn, and a one timer beat the goalie. A minute later, Wilck and Tully moved the puck in the corner to create confusion. Defenseman John Rortvedt II capitalized on Tulane’s missed assignment, moved to the open ice in the slot and fired home A&M's 4th goal.
Another transition play from Xenakis and Roark allowed Michael Molge the open ice to attack. By being patient and not forcing a shot, Molge executed a wrap-around score from behind the net. At 5:27, line mates Xenakis and Molge created the opportunity for another give and go from behind the net to Roark. In the time span of just over four minutes, the Aggies scored five goals from four different scorers.
Two more scores finished the period scoring at 8-0. Defenseman Rordvedt controlled a Tulane clearing attempt and passed to Mark Moreno. With a strong shot, Brian Dinkelkamp converted the rebound to a goal. The final period tally was an accurate slap shot from the point by Julien Legrand from Tully.
The second period opened with Tulane on a power play, but the Aggies’ aggressive fore-checking stymied the Green Wave. At 35 seconds into the period, Nathan Banks assisted Brian Moon on the lone short-handed goal of the game.
At 4:24, the Aggies converted a five on three situation. Lowery maintained strong puck control in the Tulane zone, and moved the puck to Dinkelkamp. Wilck found open ice, and converted a head’s up pass. Just over a minute later, A&M created a three-on-one situation with Legrand and Xenakis moving the puck to Molge for an open net score.
Less than one minute elapsing, Roark was accosted driving to the net and was awarded a penalty shot from the Referee. A nifty move to fake the goal tender allowed another goal to end the period at 12-0.
Brian Moon opened the third period scoring at 13:29 on a nice pass play from Banks. This goal was Mooner’s second goal of the game and third for the series. On a line change, Roark scores his fourth goal of the evening from Xenakis and Marino.
Tulane refused to quit. With less than two minutes remaining, aggressive fore-checking confused the Aggie defense causing a turnover, a shot to the net, a deflection, a goal and the loss of the shutout. However, the Aggie goalie, Kyle Vrla, has a combined four game total GAA (goals against average) of .25, and will continue to place high atop the goalie standings in the ACHA.
The final goal of the game was scored on a break away from the Aggie blue line. On a clearing pass from Rortvedt, Banks hit Oberstoetter to split the defense up the middle. A good skate and a nice deke finished the scoring at 15-1.
Again, both teams played well, but the short bench of Tulane was too costly to overcome. The Aggies used the home ice to their advantage and peppered the opposition with 73 official shots.

A&M 13 Tulane 1
This weekend’s contest featured the inaugural games for the Aggies new Ice Hockey Jerseys – we plan to have individual and Team photos posted to the Website this following week.
In their 4th year, we appreciate the efforts of the Tulane Green Wave Hockey Program, and understand their growing pains. With a long bus ride and a short bench, Tulane played courageously and with desire, but were no match for the Hometown Aggies.
Early in the first period, at 16:30, on a pass from Mark Oberstoetter and a point shot from Nic Culliton, Nathan Banks pops in a rebound for our first score. Less than one minute later on a power play opportunity, Assistant Captain Jeff Diltz scored top shelf off a rebound from John Rortvedt II and Nathan Hayward. The Aggies also scored the lone short-handed goal of the game. On a cross-zone pass, Dustin Roark finds Mark Moreno all alone. Moreno’s quick wrist shot past the goalie’s glove hand ends the period’s scoring at 3-0.
To begin the second period, the Aggies score three goals within two minutes. Andrew Tully scores unassisted from the hash marks. Diltz steals puck from the defense, creates a breakaway and with a good move, slid the puck between the Tulane goalie’s legs. On a two-on-one situation, Michael Molge feeds Dennis Herlihy as they cross Tulane’s blue line. With a slick move to fake the goaltender, Helihy tucks the puck in to the net.
At 12:05 of the second period and with A&M shorthanded, Tulane maintained offensive pressure and scored a goal to ruin the home team shutout, making the score 6-1. At 8:26, the Aggies continued their scoring. The defensive pairing of Captain Phil Lowery and Nic Culliton engineered a pass play allowing Ryan Wilck to finish with a great individual effort through a defenseman and behind the goalkeeper. The second period ended at 8-1 on a pass from Julien Legrand to Michael Molge, his second tally, a strong wrist shot to the glove side.
Texas A&M started the third period strong, scoring on solid pressure at 18:32 on a nice pass play from Roark to Wilck, his second score this evening. Perhaps the prettiest goal of the evening started deep in the A&M defensive zone at 11:22. Brian Dinkelkamp secures the puck along the boards, tape-to-tape pass to Molge who crosses into Tulane territory, and another tape-to tape pass to Banks to finish the play scoring his second goal making the score 10-1.
At 9:58, the Aggies continued their effective break out. With a nice chip pass, Lowery feeds Ryan Kahn who skates into the Green Wave zone. While drawing two defenders, open ice is created for Molge and with a nasty shot to the high glove side, notches his second goal of the game.
This next goal was very unusual. For the second opportunity in the same shift, Lowery clears the A&M zone and with a clearing pass from Roark, Diltz splits the defense. This creates his second breakaway and with the same shot, scores high glove side to record his third goal.
With 2:18 remaining, Brian Moon maintained pressure in the Tulane goal crease, and with a strong individual effort, he scored unassisted making the final score: Aggies 13 – Green Wave 1.
To both teams, the tempo was fast and the flow was upbeat. Tulane competed very well and never quit, but their short bench was their shortfall. To the Aggie’s credit, they controlled the game from the opening drop, testing the Tulane goalie with 69 official shots.
Of the 13 goals, the Aggies produced 8 scorers with Assistant Captain Jeff Diltz earning his first Hat Trick of the season.
The series continues the following morning, Sunday, December 02, 2007 at 9:00 am.
Pride of Texas Cup...
Saturday, November 24, 2007
A&M 4 Texas 3
The winner of this evening’s contest earns special recognition and bragging rights.
In 2004, Governor Rick Perry originated the Pride of Texas Cup, a once a year game to co-inside with the intense football tradition from both Universities. Since that time, the Longhorns have earned three consecutive victories over the Aggies. In the two previous contests earlier this season, A&M has enjoyed solid victories and awaited the opportunity for a home ice victory to bring the Cup to Aggieland. However, with a recent home win over the Texas Tech Raiders, UT has improved their standings in the league and looks forward to defending the Cup. Both Teams have much to prove.
The game was up-tempo and controlled from the first whistle with good puck movement and flow. Texas scored first at 15:09 on a power play situation. Three minutes later, the Aggies swarmed the Texas goalkeeper with multiple shots by Michael Molge and Nic Xenakis. Good positioning allowed line mate Eric Engelking to capture a rebound a find an open net for the tying score. The Aggies tallied a 2-1 lead on strong pressure in the UT zone. Defenseman Nic Culliton converted an attempted clearing shot by the Longhorns to a nice pass to Jeff Diltz deep in the corner. A good move to shed a defender and a clever read allowed Andrew Tully to find open ice and a quick wrist shot high to the goalies’ glove side.
The second period produced multiple scoring opportunities by both teams. A&M spent a large portion of the second period short-handed. Simple, effective systems and the stand-up play by the Aggie net-minder, Claire Gannon, kept the period scoreless.
The third period continued the play style from the scoreless second – grinding, aggressive, end-to-end action. Texas opened the scoring on an unassisted goal at 11:48 to tie the game and at 16:59, and scored the go-ahead goal on a power play, making it 3-2.
A&M created for themselves a difficult position – down one goal, clock ticking, worthy adversary. Timeout, refocus, systems adjustment. The Aggies looked to their veterans for leadership, and at 8:31, the home team tied the score. Diltz worked the puck in the corner, a pass to defenseman John Rortvedt, and an open ice to pass to Tully to notch his second goal of the game.
Both teams played conservative hockey – not willing to commit to bad positioning yet aggressive to the puck and to the net. A physical altercation with Eric Engelking led to major penalties being accessed to the Longhorns, and this appeared to spark the Aggies. At 2:38, A&M forced the action deep into the Longhorn’s territory. With a scramble in the zone, the puck deflects to Rortvedt at the point, and with an accurate slapshot, the Aggies scored the game winner, 4-3!
The Texas A&M University Aggies earned this victory – tenacious, believing, consistent – our first Pride of Texas Cup and a strong statement to the team and to the Program!

UTSA Game 2...
Saturday, November 17, 2007
A&M 7 UT - San Antonio 0
The games’ scoring may be identical, but both teams played a more aggressive, open style from the previous contest.
The Roadrunners forced the play from the opening puck drop, using Friday’s game as motivation. They were denied by the Aggies’ strong defensive play and the stand up goal tending of Kyle Vrla. For the home team, Dustin Roark scored first at 10:58 of the first period from a nice pass play from assistant Captain Jeff Diltz. The Aggies continued to apply pressure, and at 7:54, another passing play from Mark Marino and Brian Dinkelkamp produced an open net goal from Ryan Wilck. This concluded the first period scoring at 2-0.
The second period was penalty filled – 13 of 28 penalties with three misconducts being assessed. On multiple occasions, both teams competed with only three skaters on the ice. This resulted in wide open hockey, but only one score – a power play goal – by Nathan Hayward from Captain Phil Lowery at 4:03.
The Aggies controlled the scoring in the third period. Brian Dinkelkamp opened scoring at 17:56 with a rebound from Phil Lowery. Less than a minute later, PJ Hartman hit Nic Xenakis with a great clearing pass, carrying the puck into Roadrunner territory and taking a shot from the top of the slot. Assistant Captain Eric Engelking earns the rebound and scores to the bottom left corner of the net.
At 13:05, A&M scores a short-handed goal. Xenakis secures the puck cleared from the Aggie zone, breaks up the left side, dekes the defense to the right and snips the goalie between the legs. Great individual effort.
The game scoring was capped by Michael Molge, line mate of Xenakis and Engelking, and Lowery.
Another great individual effort by our goaltender, Kyle Vrla, to earn his second shut out of our season.
We also wish the injured UT-SA player a speedy recovery.
This weekend series produced a few firsts for the Aggies:
1) Balanced Scoring – 14 goals, Nathan Hayward with 2 goals
2) Multiple first scores for individual players – Banks, Herlihy, Hartman
3) Three assist game – Captain Phil Lowery
4) First Shut Out of season – Kyle Vrla
5) Second Shut Out of season - Kyle Vrla
6) And going back to the 2002-2003, first back to back Shut Outs in Single Season – Kyle Vrla.

A&M 7 UT - San Antonio 0
With 2007-2008 as the inaugural season for the San Antonio Roadrunners, the Aggies wish our fellow Texas College Hockey counterparts continued success with their program.
But not this weekend, and not in College Station.
The Aggies quickly dominated the action, applying offensive pressure early in the game. These actions produced multiple scoring opportunities for the home Team, and a Rookie, Nathan Banks, notched our initial score (and his first goal of the season) at 16:22 of the first period. A pretty goal, Banks led a rush to the net and shot to the 5-hole, unassisted.
A&M continued the pressure, and less than 2 minutes later, Dennis Herlihy forced a shot from the point, assisting Dustin Roark. At 8:00, John Rortvedt moved the puck from the point to Ryan Wilck in the corner, across the crease to Mark Moreno and an open net score. To close out the period, at 5:55, Nathan Hayward carried the puck across the blue line into the UT-SA zone. With strong puck support, Ryan Khan anticipated a drop pass, avoided the defense and shot through the goalies legs. The period finished at 4-0.
To begin the second period at 19:39, Hayward continued the scoring pressure from Brian Dinkelkamp. At the end of the period, Wilck was again the playmaker. A nice pass play in front of the net allowed Mark Oberstoetter a clean shot and his first tally of the season. This period also showed offensive pressure from the Roadrunners with 12 recorded shots on net.
The third period began 6-0 for the home team Aggies. The Roadrunners continued to press with offensive pressure, but the Aggies held strong. Rortvedt notched the games’ final score with a slap shot from the point – unassisted.
Our goalie, Kyle Vrla, earned the Aggies first shutout of the season.
Congratulations!

Nebraska 4 A&M 2
The bye week for Texas A&M was not in our favor as the Nebraska Corn Huskers scored 4 unanswered goals to defeat the Aggies 4-2.
Bus legs were a factor for the Corn Huskers early in the first period. The Aggies started the contest strong with good flow and puck movement resulting in the first score. A goal crease scramble from Dustin Roark and Ryan Wilck at 17:46 put the Aggies up 1-0.
The Aggies continued the pressure and at 15:42, the Aggies notched their second goal with a nice wrist shot from Andrew Tully.
The Corn Huskers then found their legs, and frustrated the Aggies with aggressive coverage and strong defensive play. Nebraska scored two goals in the last 4 minutes of the period, one power play and one even strength, tying the game at 2-2.
The second period saw both teams engage solid hockey with no goals and only 3 penalties. Each team had scoring opportunities but faced stand up goal tending on both ends of the ice.
To open the third period, both teams had several scoring opportunities. At 14:52, the physical tone of the game generated multiple fights and game misconducts to both teams. However, at 13:25 with A&M short handed, Nebraska took a 3-2 lead on a tip in from the front of the net.
Aggies continued to push the play, even a few goal posts, but could not produce a score. Nebraska finished the scoring during the final minute of the period for a final score of 4-2.
We enjoyed the competition against the Nebraska Corn Huskers, and we look forward to a potential re-match during the Big 12 Ice Hockey Tournament in Kansas the first weekend in February 2008.

A&M 6 North Texas 1
The Aggies came into this game more pre-pared and more focused, scoring 4 first period goals in route to a 6-1 victory over the Mean Machine.
On some contained pressure and a rebound from a low blue line shot form John Rortvedt II, Michael Molge scored on the first shift of the game. The Aggies continued to force the play in the offensive zone with solid puck control. Molge engineered a pass play from behind the goal, resulting in a one-timer and goal from Eric Engelking.
Less than 2 minutes later, Dustin Roark sets up Engelking for another one timer. At 7:43, Jeff Diltz controls a wrist shot from the high slot to close the period scoring.
The second period produce a fast paced, end to end action from both teams. Again, our goal tending from Clair Gannon stood the test. However, the shutout was spoiled by a rebound goal by UNT with 1:06 remaining in the second period.
The third period continued with the strong puck movement from both teams. The Aggies scored the final two tallies – Andrew Tully on a one timer from Rortvedt at 4:16 and a power play goal at 1:58 by Roark from Julien LeGrand.
We enjoyed our week end contest with UNT and we look forward to their return visit to College Station on Friday and Saturday, January 25 and 26, 2008.

A&M 3 North Texas 2
The Aggies traveled to Arlington, Texas for a two game series against the University of North Texas Green Machine. To compare schedules, UNT had recently battled Texas Tech in Lubbock - the Aggies were prepared for some solid hockey.
The teams played aggressive and scoreless hockey for the first period, with the Aggies playing short-handed the majority of the period.
The Mean Green opened the game scoring at 15:45 on a goal crease scramble. The Aggies answered at 3:46 on an un-assisted power play goal from our leading scorer, Michael Molge. At the close of the period, the home team scored again to finish the period at 2-1.
The third period saw good puck movement from both teams – strong offensive scoring opportunities from both sides. Our goalie, Clair Gannon, kept the Aggies in the game with multiple stops from close range.
The Aggies drew confidence from our back stopper, and we continued to pressure UNT. On a great pass from Nick Xenakis, our Assistant Captain, Jeff Diltz, notched the tying goal with 2:34 remaining in the third period.
The game clock expired with a 2-2 score, sending the game into a 5 minute, sudden death overtime. Again, with some aggressive fore-checking, Diltz forced a turnover and with a rising shot over the goalie’s glove hand, scored the game winner 34 seconds into the OT.
Both teams deserved credit for a well played, back and forth hockey game. The series continues Saturday night at the Dr. Pepper Center – Farmers Branch.

Texas Tech 5 A&M 4 (Overtime)
The second game produced an entirely different match-up, with rookie Nick Xenakis of the Aggies scoring early in the first period. The Red Raiders responded late in the period to tie the score.
Both teams traded goals in the second period with our goal scorer, Andrew Tully, from Molge and Dominic Marino, tying the game at 7:37 of the second period.
As we entered the third period tied 2-2, A&M scored 2 consecutive goals from Molge at 14:48, assisted by Xenakis and Nic Culliton, and Mark Marino at 12:50, from Dustin Roark to take a commanding 4-2 lead.
Tech continued to force the play, scoring at 11:23 and again with 1:27 remaining to tie the score and force the game into a 5 minute, sudden death over-time.
Penalties continued to play a factor in this game, as both teams split the 20 minor penalty infractions. However, an A&M Tripping penalty called at 3:55 proved costly for the visiting Aggies as the Red Raider Captain, J.P. Pruneau scored the Tech winner at 2:44 in overtime.
Our congratulations to the tenacity of the Red Raiders, and we look forward to our next match-up on December 23, 2007 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas and the Aggies home series at the Arctic Wolf Ice Center, Friday and Saturday, February 15 and 16, 2008.

Texas Tech 12 A&M 1
The opening game of the Texas A&M University 2007-2008 Ice Hockey season began with a Friday-Sunday series against the formidable Red Raiders in Lubbock, Texas.
The well-coached Raiders displayed a disciplined, physical, attacking style leading to a 12-1 victory. The Aggies, having difficulty finding their comfort zone and generating very little offensive pressure, showed their first game jitters allowing 7 power play goals. Both teams experienced an evenly called, penalty filled game; splitting the 44 minor penalties. The Aggies continued to fight through the entire game and our building block was our rookie, Michael Molge, scoring a power play goal at 16:09 in the third period.
This contest also debuted our new Texas A&M Head Coach, Arturs Kupaks, a former CHL and Lubbock Cotton Kings defenseman. We needed his experience to re-group and compete against the Raiders during the second game of the season.
We also wish to thank the Lubbock Youth Hockey Moms for their hospitality following the Friday night game (always a pleasure), and the Training Staff of the Red Raiders for their professional help during the weekend.
