Texas A&M University Aggies (9)VS. University of Texas – San Antonio Road Runners (2)
The Roadrunners of the University of Texas – San Antonio hosted the Aggies this past weekend at the Northwood Ice Center in our lone series of the season. Both teams are enjoying successful and ranked ACHA seasons, and both teams need wins to advance in the standings.
A&M opened the scoring at the period mid-point. Dustin Roark gained control of the puck deep in Roadrunner territory. A pass to defensemen John Rortvedt signaled the Aggies to crash the net, and with this activity, Nick Xenakis deflected the puck into the net, 1-0 Aggies.
Less than one minute later, UTSA tallied and the period scoring ended, 1-1.
The Aggies re-grouped during the break, and scored three quick of four un-answered goals to start the period. At 17:39, Aubrey Berkowitz and Mark Moreno worked good puck movement in the UTSA zone. Captain Phil Lowery fired a low shot into traffic, past a screen, 2-1.
At 15:28, Brian Young directed a point shot to the net. Xenakis slapped at the rebound and Roark found the 5-hole, 3-1.
At 14:56, Roark fed Xenakis on a nice give-and-go deep in the UTSA zone. Xenakis stepped up, beat the defender and the goalie high glove, 4-1.
To finish the second period scoring with less than a minute remaining, Ben Lang initiated a two-on-one rush into the Roadrunner zone. The puck was centered to Nathan Banks, a deflection and 5-1 Aggies.
The Roadrunners never quit and scored the first goal of the 3rd period, 5-2, but the Aggies finished the scoring with four more un-answered goals.
As Michael Molge entered the ice following the expiration of his minor penalty, he controled an A&M clearing pass and developed a two-on-one situation. Assistant Captain Eric Engelking joined the play, received a pass crossing the blue line and directed the puck past the goaltender. 6-2 Aggies.
On a five-on-three situation at mid-period, the defensive pairing of Young and Rortvedt create a slap shot on target. A rebound, a scramble and Justin Cooley found the open net, 7-2 Aggies.
44 seconds later, Rortvedt and Engelking again created open ice and a quick pass to Cooley to snipe a wrist shot off the post, 8-2.
On a two-on-one situation with 3:41 remaining, the Aggies finished the scoring as Roark moved into the UTSA territory, he pulled the defender and the goalie and allowed Xenakis the empty net score.
