Baylor Bears (2) VS. Texas A&M University Aggies (8)

Welcome to the beginning of the 2009-2010 Texas A&M University Ice Hockey season!

This Home game represents multiple first for both Clubs:

1) After a 2 year absence, Baylor has rejoined the ACHA as Division II

2) Season Opener for both programs

3) Baptism by fire for both Head Coaches:

Baylor Bears Head Coach James (Jimmy) Summers – previously coached the Aggies in 2000-2001 to a winning record and Texas A&M University Head Coach Sean Boyle – by way of Alaska, Utah and now Magnolia.

Both programs have high expectations, and each game represents the challenge to the next level. Both programs are also poised to accept daunting tests …

The Aggies opened the scoring less that 2 minutes elapsed. Michael Zahner back checked hard, stole the puck from the Baylor forward, turned and led the attack back into the Bear’s territory. A quick shot produced a re-bound captured and buried by Dustin Roark, 1-0.

On a power play opportunity, point man Michael Molge foiled an icing attempt and shot the puck towards the goalie. Brian Young one timed the re-bound, and Assistant Captain Jeff Diltz put the loose puck low blocker side, 2-0.

Our new Rookie notched his first A&M tally at 15:50. From the face-off the face in Bear territory, the puck is pulled behind the net. The scramble produces the puck centered to the slot. A battle ensues, and Anthony Rapesak finds the spot high glove side to put the Aggies at 3-0.

The Bears round out the period’s scoring at 16:18 and 17:03 (short-handed) to finish the period at 3-2.

The Aggies again start the second period scoring at 3:40 on another power play opportunity. On a nice breakout system from deep in the Aggie zone, Michael Molge brings the puck down the boards. On a pass to Assistant Captain Jeff Diltz, Young sneaks in on the weak side a swats a re-bound into the net, 4-2.

10 minutes elapsed before the Ags tally. On a break out, some mis-communications from the Bears created a 3 on 1 for A&M. As Zahner entered the zone, Berkowitz gathered the drop pass to beat the goal-tender, 5-2.

At 7:31, Diltz led the Aggie attack into the Bear’s zone. Justin Cooley received a forward pass crossing the blue line, beat the defenseman and fired from mid slot to squeak the 5-hole, 6-2.

At 8:31 of the third period, on a face-off in the Baylor zone, Zahner picked the puck from the center’s scramble and scored 5-hole, 7-2.

To finish the evening’s scoring with less than 5 minutes remaining, Diltz snatches a loose puck from the Bear defender at the circle top in Baylor’s territory. A quick accurate shot finished the evening offense to an 8-2 score.

We wish the Bears success on their ‘inaugural’ season – their short bench and youth were their dis-advantage to the experienced and seasoned Aggies. We hope to continue this match-up in the following years.
