Texas Tech Red Raiders (3) VS. Texas A&M University Aggies (6)
The Red Raiders scored a power play goal just 37 seconds into the game, but A&M rookie Patrick Madigan tied it at 1 less than a minute later with a rebound during a power play with assists from Dominic Marino and Assistant Captain Jeff Diltz.
Tech regained the lead with about 6 minutes remaining in the period, but less than two minutes later, Justin Cooley received a pass from Marino, beat the defense wide, and skated in on a two-on-one. He followed up on his own rebound to score, and the period ended 2-2.
About 7 minutes into the second period, Diltz took a hit along the boards but had just enough time to pass the puck to Captain Eric Engelking, who took the opportunity for a breakaway, made a deke to the right, and scored, bringing the score to 3-2.
Less than two minutes later, Michael Zahner took a shot from the point. Assistant Captain Nick Xenakis picked it up on the right side of the net, brought it around the net, and s. Newcomer Tom Callaghan tapped it in the net, and the Aggies were two goals ahead, 4-2.
Tech scored with 8 minutes to go in the 2nd period, pulling themselves up to one goal behind, 4-3.
With four and a half minutes left in the period, Engelking blocked a shot on the penalty kill, giving him a one on one with a defenseman. He made a quick stop to the right and sent the defense the other way. With a 1 on 0 opportunity against the goalie, he took a shot to the top right corner and scored. The second period ended with a two-goal Aggie lead, 5-3.
Six minutes into the third period, Tech scored another goal and brought the score to 5-4. A minute later on a power play, Cooley made a pass to Madigan, who gave the puck to Marino. He took a snap shot and brought the score to 5-3.
To finish off the scoring, Zahner scored on yet another power play with help from Diltz and Marino. The game ended 6-3.
Aggie goaltender Clair Gannon made 36 spectacular saves.
