University of Texas - San Antonio Roadrunners (5) VS. Texas A&M University Aggies (4)
After an intense game on Friday, both the Aggies and UTSA were raring to go when the second game started on Halloween.
A tense eight and half minutes ticked by until UTSA scored the first goal of the game on a power play opportunity at 11:33. No more goals were scored until the beginning of the second period when UTSA capitalized on another power play and scored 55 seconds into the second period, 2-0.
With 10:31 on the clock for the second period and a five-on-four advantage, Brian Young passed the puck to Michael Zahner, who shot the puck from the top of the right circle. Captain Eric Engelking was lying in wait in front of the net and tipped it in glove side. The score became 2-1.
At 5:07, A&M took advantage of a power play as Brian Young sent the puck to Michael Zahner, who shot it back door, scored through the five-hole, and tied it up at 2.
UTSA quickly responded with two goals at 4:49 and 3:00, and the second period finished with a score of 4-2.
The Aggies refocused during the break and came out fighting; nine minutes went by until Eric Engelking skated the puck out of the defensive zone and went one-on-one with the goalie. A shot from the top of the circles at 11:41 resulted in a score of 4-3.
Still determined, the Aggies produced one more goal in regulation: after accepting a pass from Nick Xenakis, Julien Legrand took a shot from the point at 3:38 and tied the game to push it to overtime.
An anxious five minutes passed, scoreless, and the shootout began. The first UTSA shooter was successful, and no others were until A&M’s fifth shooter, Aubrey Berkowitz, slid one past the UTSA goalie. The next UTSA shooter scored, and unfortunately, the Aggies lost their first game of the season in the shootout.
