Texas A&M University Aggies (6) VS. Texas Tech University Red Raiders (4)

In a rarity for the Aggies, the puck drop was set for 10:30 am. This ‘tee time’ was early for both teams, especially since we left the ice just 12 hours earlier. This game was also a continuation of the aggressive and physical styles from the previous evening.

The Aggies scored first and early with less than 4 minutes into the game. Michael Molge moved the puck from Aggie territory to Justin Cooley in the neutral zone. An accurate pass to Jeff Diltz to beat the Tech defender wide, and with a quick back hand 5-hole, 1-0 Aggies.

Tech responded with 2 goals to finish the period scoring, and at 10:56 in the 2nd period, the Raiders scored again for a 3-1 lead.

At 12:52, A&M closed the gap. Diltz gained control of the puck along the Raider blue-line. Eluding a defender found Eric Engelking alone top slot, and an accurate slap shot top left corner, 3-2 Raiders.

5 minutes later, A&M tied the score never again to relinquish the lead. With sustained pressure in the Tech zone, Mike Zahner launched a shot from the mid slot. Dustin Roark poked at the re-bound as the puck bounced again. Tom Callaghan captured and buried the puck over the outstretched goalie’s pad, tie game.

With a 3-3 score to start the 3rd period, both teams increased the physical intensity of the match.

With less than 3 minutes into the period, on a power play, Cooley again fired a loose puck toward the goal. Diltz handled the re-bound, 4-3 Aggies. 5 minutes later, line mates work another score. Crossing the Tech blue line, Diltz blasted a slap shot on goal and Engelking found the back of the net, 5-3.

With time as a premium, the Raiders pulled their goalie, and at 18:41, pull within 1, 5-4.

After the face off, Tech again pulled the net minder to create the extra skater as the play moved into the Aggie zone. At 18:48, Brian Young intercepted a loose puck and skooched home an empty netter.

Final Score: Aggies 6 Red Raiders 4
